Performance at Strike Lane
Despite outstanding teaching and learning and a clear focus on raising standards, the multiple vulnerabilities of our last two years cohorts, meant that we have dipped below national averages, in certain aspects of the curriculum. In 2017 73% of pupils attained at least the expected standard in reading, 69% in writing, 69% in mathematics and 81% in GPS (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling). In 2017, the percentage of pupils achieving the higher standard in reading and GPS was significantly above Lancashire and national with 42% in reading and 42% in GPS. The percentage of pupils achieving greater depth in writing was 8% and 15% in mathematics. 50% attained at the least the expected standard in all of reading, writing and mathematics.
The average scaled score for the cohort (where 100 is the expectation) was 104.9 in reading, 100.7 in mathematics and 107.1 in grammar, punctuation and spelling. Overall this is above the national average.
The school’s judgement is that children have still made good progress in Key Stage 2; cross- referencing the school’s tracking data with work in books and observations of teaching and learning provides strong evidence that pupils continue to make good progress.
Progress figures indicate that progress in reading was not significantly different to the national and Lancashire average, at -2.1 (-4.55 to +0.33 confidence interval). Maths was below national and Lancashire at -6.00 (-8.21 to -3.80 confidence interval). Progress in writing was below both national and Lancashire at -7.16 (-9.53 to -3.80). However, progress in writing had been consistently above national and Lancashire over time and the school acknowledge that the way in which they have interpreted the demands of the interim framework in its use is possibly a mitigating factor in the discrepancy.
Historically, standards of attainment have been above the national average and our School Improvement Plan priorities are strongly focusing on improving attainment and progress to meet the national and Lancashire averages in all areas.
